Wealth reconciliation is not improved by forcing a balancing figure at the end. A stronger process begins with the opening position, records movements during the year and makes every material difference explainable from available evidence.
A five-part working-paper structure
- Opening position: carry forward assets, liabilities and relevant balances from the prior accepted working file.
- Sources: identify income, receipts, financing, disposals and other supported inflows relevant to the reconciliation.
- Applications: identify asset additions, repayments, expenses and other outflows.
- Closing position: reconcile the closing assets and liabilities to the records available for the relevant date.
- Difference testing: investigate unexplained amounts instead of hiding them inside broad descriptions.
Evidence before explanation
Bank statements, property documents, loan confirmations, sale or purchase documents, tax returns and other relevant records should be organized before final explanations are drafted. The purpose is to make the reasoning reviewable by another professional.
Where AI can help
AI can assist with categorizing descriptions, comparing lists, extracting data and flagging unmatched items. It should not decide whether a source of funds is legally acceptable or invent missing evidence.
